S. Reed Multi-Family Structure Fire
Posted On: Dec 21, 2019

At 1:07 on Saturday December 21st, Local 2086 and 1309 members responded to a second alarm apartment fire in the 8400 block of S. Reed St. in unincorporated Jefferson County. Initial reports stated there were multiple people trapped, residents were jumping from their apartment units and cars were on fire as well. When members arrived on scene, they found an apartment building completely engulfed in flames. The fire had extended to cars nearby and the radiant heat was also damaging other cars in the area. Members immediately pulled 2 1/2 inch hose line to attack the heavy fire conditions. The fire destroyed a large portion of the stairwell, limiting access to the second and third floors. Because of that, crews used Vent Enter Isolate Search (VEIS) to search the majority of the apartments, meaning members put up ladders from the outside of the structure to get in through windows. 9 people were evaluated for smoke inhalation or injuries, two of those were transported to the hospital. One of those people was a Local 2086 member, taken to the hospital with a minor injury. During search efforts, firefighters found a cat and reunited it with owners. The American Red Cross and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Victim Advocates arrived on scene to support displaced residents for 6 apartment units. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
