Just after 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2022, Local members responded to a house fire on Glasgow Court in Douglas County. Many concerned community members saw the large plume of black smoke which was visible for miles. Crews encountered low to zero visibility and extreme heat inside while using thermal imaging cameras to quickly search in the toxic smoke for people and pets. The residents weren’t home at the time, but members rescued 2 dogs and 1 cat. SMFR is equipped with pet oxygen masks which were used to treat the animals. Thankfully, after receiving fresh air and water they were all doing ok!
38 members and multiple units responded to the incident which took 30 minutes to bring under control. Extensive overhaul was needed to locate and extinguish hot spots in the basement, first floor, second floor and attic space. Investigators determined the cause is accidental. Spontaneous combustion of organic material that was next to the house started the fire.
