Marathon of Hose
Posted On: Oct 18, 2020

A marathon of hose. 26.2 miles. 138,435 feet. Stretched by the crew of Engine 33 in a self-challenge to be better at their job. What started as a funny idea in January became a reality by October. They did it. And they’re still going.

10 months of walking, crawling and running with hose during a variety of basic, advanced and unheard-of scenarios. All hours of the day, between emergencies, physical fitness, district training and station chores, they stretch hose. “We keep learning new things,” said 19-year veteran Captain Josh Schmidt. Even the newest generation of SMFR is getting in on the learning experience. First year Probationary Firefighters have rotated through the firehouse and pulled their fair share hose, too.

Yesterday the crew donned their new baseball caps with special embroidery. They proudly wear 26.2 on their hats and marathon stickers on their helmets. They’ve inspired other SMFR firefighters to challenge their crew in the same way.
