Wellington St. Chimney Fire

At 2:20 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022, Local members responded to the 7300 block of S. Wellington St. after a neighbor called 911 and reported dark smoke coming from a house down the street. When members arrived, they observed an unsafe volume of smoke billowing from the chimney and additional crews were dispatched. The occupants safely evacuated and searches of the home with thermal imaging cameras determined the fire was likely isolated inside the chimney. Dry chemical fire extinguishers were used to smother the burning creosote and control the fire, but high heat and smoke was still visible. A UAV with a thermal imaging camera was used to monitor conditions from above and consistently measured a 350°F temperature. Several crews remained on scene for over an hour opening the chimney flue, cooling it down and they confirmed that flames did not extend into the home.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends that all chimneys should be inspected annually to ensure the structure and flue are safe, free of obstructions and combustible deposits.
