At 2:18 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, Local members responded to a plane crash on E-470 between S. Jamacia St. and S. Peoria St. in Douglas County. The Cessna P210N, a single engine aircraft with seating for 6, was flying from Dodge City Regional Airport to Centennial Airport and was on final approach to land when the crash occurred. The plane went down in the wide highway median and remarkably, no passing vehicles collided. Two adults were on board the aircraft and they safely evacuated from the plane as the engine caught fire. Both adults sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital by SMFR.
Flames from the engine rapidly spread to leaking fuel and quickly consumed most of the aircraft. Members used a hose line and turrets from the aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles to extinguish the flames. Once the fire was extinguished, SMFR and Colorado State Patrol Hazardous Materials Team personnel worked to mitigate concerns with the fuel. A mixture of fuel and water was left in the wing tank which was drained into a catch basin. An environmental clean-up service assisted by containing and absorbing fuel that spilled in the median. Once the fuel was no longer a safety risk, a tow truck was used to remove the aircraft from the crash site. The FAA and NTSB will conduct an investigation to determine what caused the accident.
