Highway 67 Brush Fire
Posted On: Jul 31, 2019

At 6:32 p.m. on Tuesday July 30, 2019, Local members responded to an automatic aid wildland fire with West Douglas County Fire Protection District.  911 callers reported 2 fires burning near Madge Gulch Road and Highway 67, a large plume of smoke was already visible from miles away. The smallest fire along Madge Gulch was contained at 50x50 feet and quickly extinguished. The larger “North Highway 67 Fire” was burning grass, brush and trees in very rugged terrain. Firefighters from Caslte Rock Local 4116, Jackson 105 Fire Protection, and West Douglas hiked up to the fire where they used hand tools and chainsaws to build containment line. Personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Douglas County Sherrifs office and Douglas County OEM were also on scene assisting.

Although no evacuations were ordered Highway 67 was closed for several hours.  Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Multi-Mission Aircraft flew above the fire and measured it at 4.93 acres. Personnel remained on scene throughout the night and additional crews will arrive on Wednesday to continue containment efforts and extinguish hot spots. One Firefighter was evaluated for a minor injury and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
