U-Haul Forklift Accident
Posted On: Oct 18, 2020

At 7:46 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2020, Local members responded to an entrapment at the U-Haul facility located at 1750 E. County Line Road in Douglas County. Upon arrival, members found a forklift on its side with the driver trapped underneath it. Paramedics immediately began treating the injured person while lifting and stabilizing equipment was put in place. Due to the location of the victim, the entire 2,000-pound forklift had to be lifted off. Members used spreading tools, jacks and airbags to carefully lift the weight. Wooden blocks called “cribbing” were stacked between the ground and the forklift as the rescue operation took place. The cribbing was used to capture the progress being made and prevent the forklift from crushing the person a second time, if a tool failure occurred. It took approximately 19 minutes from the arrival of the first crew until the person was safely extricated. They were quickly transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Following the rescue, Firefighters secured an elevated 500-pound storage crate that was at risk of falling and injuring workers.

Engine 15, Medic 15, Battalion 1, Medic 13, Tower 18, Rescue 34 and District 1 responded to this incident.
